Top 10 Major Accident Statistics!

Sep 7, 2015

Research findings from the National Truck Accident Research Centre (NTARC), established by National Transport Insurance (NTI), a leading heavy vehicle and equipment insurer in Australia.

NTARC undertakes specific research that provides insights into the cause of serious heavy vehicle crashes. Please note these findings are limited to NTI losses, however given their market penetration, this is a real indicator of industry performance. The facts are focused on losses with a severity of $50,000 and greater in 2013.

1. Inappropriate speed accounted for 27% of NTI’s claims registered, and of that 73.6% of speed losses resulted in a rollover. Monday is consistently the worst day and March is the worst month for Speed related incidents.

2. Most incidents occurred between the hours of 10:00am and 4:00pm when the on-road population of commercial vehicles is at its highest.

3. Highlighted in the 2015 report, Queensland is the worst performing state in Australia.

4. Monday to Wednesdays continue to account for the majority of losses with 55.7% of incidents. From a fatigue perspective, Tuesday’s are by far the worst performing day.

5. Almost 25% of all major accidents in Australia occur on Highway 1.

6. 50% of all incidents investigated occurred on highways, whether coastal, regional or in remote areas.

7. 67.6% of incidents occurred on the outbound journey from the home base, with 40% of these losses occurring on either a Monday or Tuesday.

8. 61% of majority of cases in Australia, major crash incidents occur within 250 kilometers from the point of departure.

9. Consistent findings prove incidents occur within the initial 5 hours of any given journey, whether it is the outgoing or return leg.

10. 70% of drivers in major crash incidents were aged over 40 years of age, and 1 in 3 are over the age of 55. The average age has increased to 46 years.
