The 2019 Edition of the NTARC Major Accident Investigation Report, provides interesting insights from NTI’s heavy motor vehicle claims. The report was released to AustBrokers Comsure on the 24th of April, 2019.

The report examines data from 756 insurance claims, and looks into the causes of accidents in addition to comparing the data over a 12 year period.

What does NTARC stand for?
NTARC is the National Truck Accident Research Centre.

Who is NTI?
NTI is one of Australia’s Leading Truck Insurers. Watch a short video here:

The NTARC Report:

Conducts an in-depth analysis on claims such as:

  • Mechanical Failure (Brakes, Structural, Tyre, Coupling, Steering/Suspension etc.)
  • Driver Error (Following Distance, Distraction, Vehicle Positioning etc.)
  • Non-impact Fire (Engine, Wheel, Trailer, Load)
  • Fatigue
  • Roll-Over
  • Multiple Vehicle Incidents
  • Not-at-Fault

Interestingly, it takes a closer look at defining factors such as:

  • Direction of Travel
  • By Month / Season
  • Day of the Week
  • Time of the Day
  • Location
  • Road Category
  • Freight Category
  • Vehicle Configuration
  • Distance from Point of Departure
  • Drivers Age
  • Size of the Business
  • Speed

Whilst the value of this data-driven and evidence-based report contributes towards heavy vehicle regulation, it also allows Transport Businesses to review their practices to ensure they are forward-thinking, providing the best for their drivers, their customers and their fleet.

This data also serves as a good reminder to review your current insurance policy coverage to ensure you are correctly covered in the event of an accident.
